Day One: Monthly Letter
Dear Readers, I give up. It's April. The robins are hopping across the front lawn, the goldfinches are beginning to show their spring feathers, and yours truly is finally getting it through her fat skull that there isn't going to be any snow. (I'll admit that I'm still harboring a tiny ray of hope that's fostered by the memory of a huge April storm almost twenty years ago but even I know the chances are slim.) Any day now we'll be dragging the deck furniture up from the basement, replacing worn seat cushions, determining whether or not the umbrella can make it through another year, and wishing my parents were still around to enjoy it all with us. But life goes on. I've heard that expression all my life but I don't think I ever fully understood it until right now. Spring really is about renewal, about life reasserting itself in living color everywhere you look, and even those of us who love the stark, glittering beauty of winter have to admit the sight of bright yellow daffodils dotting a hillside does wonders for the soul.
One of the surest signs of spring around here is the first yard sale of the year. Our neighborhood is planning a mega-yard sale in a few weeks and Roy and I are sorting through our closets in search of long-forgotten items in need of a new home. The last yard sale we had was back in the old neighborhood in the late summer of 1986, a few weeks before we moved here, and it's taken me almost sixteen years to recover from it! We pretty much dragged all of our old stuff into the front yard, slapped FOR SALE signs of everything that didn't move, and hoped for the best. Nobody told me I'd need a whip, a chair, and a stun gun. We lived on a busy through street and our tiny yard was quickly overrun by bargain hunters who thought nothing of loudly trashing our taste in chairs, sofas, and books then asking if we'd mark down the price! Keep your fingers crossed for us this. I'm sixteen years older and a whole lot crankier this time around . . . .
So what's new on the website? Well, the April contest is up and running: a $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com and some autographed books. We have a couple of new recipes, including one of my childhood favorites that I found tucked away in my mother's recipe box. We call it Wheaties Cake but its official name is Velvet Crumb Cake. Roy thinks it isn't worth its weight in Bisquick but I'm very fond of it. You might be too. And don't forget to check out Chapter 3 of Midnight Lover. I hope to post Chapter 4 on April 15th Ð stay tuned.
With affection,
