Day One: Monthly Letter April 1, 2000
Like family. Somehow it always comes back down to that one very basic element, doesn't it? Family. We can't wait to escape them when we're young. We can't wait to go home again when we're not so young and life has left us with a few bumps and bruises. The same people who made us crazy now seem impossibly dear to us and we'd do anything to hold on just a little bit longer. My Grandma El (Daddy's mother) would have turned 100 this year on April 18th. She's been gone eleven years now and I can't tell you how much I miss her stories about growing up in Auckland, New Zealand in the early part of the 20th century. Grandma El lived a full and fascinating life. One day I might tell you some of those stories . . . but beware! A few of them are definitely X-rated. And who can forget April 15th, better known as Income Tax Day in the United States. Of course, April 15th has another, infinitely more pleasant association around here. My husband Roy and I met at a dance on April 15, 1966 and it was quite honestly love at first sight. No, it doesn't happen only between the covers of our books. Sometimes it happens in real life too. I was fifteen. He was seventeen. The odds were against us but somehow it didn't matter. We married two years later and have been together ever since. (Is it any wonder I write romance novels for a living?) Our niece Laura and her love Rocky are getting married on April 15th - personally I can't think of a more auspicious date for a wedding. One last thing: it's time for a new contest. If you return to my home page and click on New Contest, you'll find out all about it.
Until next month,
