Day One: Monthly Letter

February 2003

The first chapter of SHORE LIGHTS is up and running, along with the author's note that appears in the book. I'll be looking forward to hearing what you think of it. SHORE LIGHTS will be out in May and I'm hoping that the absolutely beautiful cover Berkley has provided will draw in lots of readers who are new to my work. Fridge magnets featuring the SHORE LIGHTS cover should be available within the next few weeks. I'll keep you posted.

And we're coming to the end of MIDNIGHT LOVER, aren't we? Chapter 22 is waiting for you right now and Chapter 23 (and the Epilogue) will close out the story on Valentine's Day. I hope you've enjoyed getting to know Caroline and Jesse and are ready to start reading FIRE'S LADY on March 1. FIRE'S LADY (my first historical) was originally published in 1989 by Crown's Pageant imprint. It had an absolutely gorgeous Elaine Duillo cover which featured the beach at East Hampton on Long Island, an area I know well. What fun it was to visit the Hamptons and call it research!

I don't know how I managed to miss it last year, but I saw my first episode of American Idol last night and I finally know what all the fuss was about. But I have a question: am I the only one who cried throughout the show? All of those kids with all of those hopes and dreams - I found myself dissolving into tears every time the camera zeroed in on those eager faces. Writers know a lot about rejection but at least when we're turned down, we can hide behind the mail carrier until we recover. Those kids were right out there - before millions of people, no less! - taking their lumps for the world to see. Wow! You can't help rooting for every single one of them, even the ones who can't carry a tune. (I'm one of those, unfortunately.) Looks like I'll be adding American Idol to my must-see viewing list which, to my embarrassment, already includes The Bachelor, The Bachelorette and (forgive me) Joe Millionaire.

There's a new recipe waiting for you: Yoshida Wrap, a delicious concoction of chicken and garlic and ginger and veggies laced with Yoshida's Original Sauce and served in a wrapper. (But I guess you figured that out by the name, didn't you?) And check out the Free Stuff page. Promise me you won't be shy. If you'd like something, drop me a line. Last but not least, the February contest features the usual $25 gift certificate to Amazon, signed books, a snow globe from exotic Atlantic City, a copy of Life Journal, and some surprises.

If you haven't joined BarbaraBrettonUpdate, my notify list, you might want to consider it. Over the last few months it's evolved into a monthly newsletter, complete with lots of photos and previews that aren't available through the website. (Subscribers will see a preview of my November book, GIRLS OF SUMMER, next month.) It originally was meant strictly as a means to let you know about what's new and exciting on the website but it's definitely more than that now. If you'd like to give it a try, drop me a note with UPDATE in the subject header and I'll take care of the rest.

Time for me to get back to work on GIRLS OF SUMMER. Have a wonderful, romantic Valentine's Day and don't forget to keep in touch.

Warmly,
