Day One: Monthly Letter
I never thought I'd say this, but I've had enough. Snow, that is. Yes, the original Queen of Snow has finally thrown in the shovel and declared Mother Nature the winner, hands down. In the space of ten days last month, we received almost three and a half feet of snow - thirty inches of which arrived in one amazing twenty-four hour period! Oh, it was beautiful! There's no denying that. But the six-foot drifts that were piled up at our front door, back door, and garage doors, made getting out a bit of a chore.
And let's not talk about the two inches of rain that arrived a few days after the thirty inches of snow . . . the combination left us with five inches of icy water in our basement and a healthy respect for our sump pumps. Roy had to build a Bretton version of an aqueduct in our backyard to direct the runoff away from our house and out toward the street and the storm drains. I was suitably impressed by his talent for civil engineering and I can tell you that the house is quite relieved that a river no longer runs through it.
February might be a short month but it definitely had its share of excitement! Thanks to all of you who wrote to let me know how much you enjoyed reading MIDNIGHT LOVER. I was absolutely delighted to be able to offer you the chance to spend time with Caroline and Jesse. MIDNIGHT LOVER, in its entirety, will stay on the website at least until the end of the year so if you missed a chapter along the way, feel free to dip back in. MIDNIGHT LOVER is over but don't despair because FIRE'S LADY debuts this month right here on my website. FIRE'S LADY was originally published in 1989 by Pageant Books, an imprint of Crown. It's an historical romance that takes place in East Hampton, New York during the Gilded Age. We have love, lust, wickedness, honor, betrayal, hot tempers, and even hotter sex. I think you'll enjoy it. The reviews were good but they're buried some place in my scary mess of an office. I'll dig them up and post them when I can. I'm writing the last few chapters of my November book, GIRLS OF SUMMER, and enjoying every minute of my time with Hall Talbot and Ellen Markowitz from A SOFT PLACE TO FALL. I love spending time in Shelter Rock Cove with old friends like Annie Galloway and her friends Claudia and Susan, and new friends like Ellen's sister Deirdre O'Brien and Scott Peretti, the new guy in town. But there will be plenty of time to tell you about GIRLS OF SUMMER. Right now it's SHORE LIGHTS, my May release, that I want to talk to you about. Chapter Two is waiting for you on the website so make sure you sneak a peek before you leave. I'm so excited about this story. I cried when I typed the last scene and that's usually a good sign that I managed to really connect with the characters. Of course, you'll be the judge of that in May when SHORE LIGHTS reaches the bookstores. My SHORE LIGHTS fridge magnets have just arrived. If you'd like one, drop me a note at promo2003@earthlink.net with the words SHORE LIGHTS in the subject header and I'll send one out to you, along with a datebook. (Don't forget to include your mailing address!) There's so much I want to tell you about but it will have to wait until next month when the website will have a brand new look. I'm very excited about the changes Willa (world's best web designer and one of the original on-line diarists - make sure you visit her at www.willa.com) and I are talking about. I can't wait for the Bulletin Board to be up and running so we can get together and shoot the breeze any time we want. I'll keep you posted on details as I have them. So what's new and noteworthy this month?
