Day One: Monthly Letter

Barbara Bretton January, 2001

Happy New Year !

I might be a little bit late with the greeting (although I'm in time for the Chinese New Year) but that doesn't mean my wishes for you are any less sincere. Just late, that's all.

I suppose I could blame it on the nineteen inches of snow that fell the day before New Year's Eve . . . or maybe on the flu that found me on Christmas morning . . . or the book that I just couldn't seem to finish writing, no matter how many pages I zipped through. A SOFT PLACE TO FALL finally made it to my publisher two weeks ago and I still haven't quite managed to let go of Annie and Sam. Or Max, for that matter. Max is an aging Golden Retriever whose yen for pepperoni pizza plays a part in bringing Annie and Sam together for the first time. But you'll read all about it very soon because I'll be posting excerpts from this November release beginning in April.

Most people burrow into their caves come wintertime but not me. I come alive when the temperatures plunge (must be thanks to my Grandma Lil who was born in Uppsala, Sweden) and start tackling all of the projects that I happily ignore the rest of the year.

Like my office.

Sound familiar? I believe it was this time last year when I swore I was going to tackle the pit of chaos I call my office. I probably shouldn't admit it here but my resolve only lasted half a day. I became completely overwhelmed by the stacks of unread mail, the teetering piles of papers waiting to be filed, the books tumbling off the shelves, and I bolted the door and ran for my life. Well, I'm going to give it another try this week. I've been reading some of those how-to-get-organized books that were stacked on the floor near the door and they recommend that you pick a corner of the room in question and work outward from there. Too bad they don't tell you how to climb over the mountains of stuff in order to get to that corner of the room in the first place. If you don't hear from me in February, you'll know where to look.

I have some plans for the website brewing so I hope you'll come back often and check up on what's new and interesting. You can always sign up for my monthly notify list which is a quick note that lets you know that the monthly letter is up and running and tells you about other additions to the site. All you have to do is scroll down and you'll find an easy way to subscribe. Or you can always drop me a note and I'll be happy to do it for you.

Wishing you a January filled with good books,
