Day One: Monthly Letter

January 1, 2000

Greetings from central New Jersey.

I could lie to you and say that it's the first day of the first month of the last year of the second Millennium (I'm one of those who believe the Millennium doesn't start until 2001) but since I'm hoping you'll come back to visit often, I've decided to start this relationship off on the right foot and tell the truth.

It isn't January 1st at all. It isn't even January 15th. I am embarrassed to admit that it is January 30th and I am only now beginning to implement some of the many grand ideas that plague a procrastinator's life. You know how it is with plans. They sound wonderful at the inception but finding the time for them isn't always quite as easy you it should be.

Or could it be I'm not quite the organizational genius I'd like to be.

Ouch. The truth hurts, doesn't it? I have the organizational skills of the average three-year-old child. I am very good at piling up the books and magazines and papers into attractive piles. I am equally good at knocking them over and starting again. What I'm not so good at is dealing with the mess in any meaningful way. Oh, I have all the books on the topic. In fact, last year when I forced my way into my office (aka The Place Where Unanswered Letters Go to Die) what tumbled from one of the many stacks of books on the floor but a copy of "Getting Organized." If you're ever asked to define irony, you have my permission to use that story.

Over the years I've tried color-coding, the basket system, prioritizing, rolling files, hanging files, lateral files, round files, you name it. I bought a scanner and spent hours sliding papers into the computer. What did I end up with? A computer with 23K left on the hard drive and the inability to toss the hard copy because who trusts computers anyway.

If you have any tips to share, I'd deeply appreciate it.

I hope your New Year, wherever you might be, is off to a grand start! See you here next month . . . two days from now.

Cheers,
