Day One: Monthly Letter

Barbara Bretton March 2002

Dear Readers,

The Winter That Wasn't is drawing to a close and we're still awaiting our first snow storm. Oh, we had a few flakes back in January (or was it February?) but not enough to do more than briefly glaze the front lawn and driveway. I've found myself longing for blizzards and ice storms and the familiar sound of the township's sand trucks chugging down our street at two a.m. of a snowy night.

The one good thing about a snowless winter is that Roy and I were able to drive down to Cape May for a few days. Cape May is a charming Victorian seashore resort at the southernmost tip of New Jersey, one of those very special places that never fail to lift your spirits and remind you of how lucky you are to be an easy drive away. We stopped, as usual, for a bowl of Cape May clam chowder at The Pilot House (see my version of same in the recipe section) and split a slice of Dark Side of the Moon, a thoroughly decadent chocolate dessert that I'm sure must be against the law in at least a dozen states. I needed to do a little research for my manuscript-in-progress and I felt almost guilty to consider walking the wide expanse of beautiful beach as part of my job. (Notice, please, the use of the word "almost.")

Thanks to all of you who took time to let me know how much you're enjoying my experiment in on-line publishing. The second chapter of Midnight Lover, my 1989 western historical romance for Pocket Books, has been posted -- I hope you'll stop by and meet Caroline Bennett and her maid Abigail O'Brien who are about to embark on an even wilder adventure than either has ever imagined.

If you'd like a reminder about website updates, including when the next installment of Midnight Lover is up and running, just send me a note at Barbara@barabarabretton.com with "Midnight Lover" in the subject header and I'll do the rest. Wishing you a splendid vernal equinox,
