Day One: Monthly Letter May 1, 2000
A rainbow when you least expect it. A forgotten ten dollar bill tucked away in the pocket of your jacket. A sunny Saturday when the weather reports had all forecast rain. Everyday magic. Who doesn't believe in that? But how about those other kinds of magic? What about ESP and ghosts and near-death experiences? We were watching The Sixth Sense this afternoon. You know the scene when Haley Joel Osment's character tells his mother that the answer is "Everyday," the one where his mother dissolves in tears at the knowledge that her late mother is proud of her? I watched that and a shiver ran up my spine. You know why? Because I believe. I don't know why or how, but I do. I believe anything is possible. I believe I don't know half of what's going on in this world or any other. I believe the soul endures even after the body finally lies down to rest. I believe we know this as children and re-learn it again when we're old. How about you? I'm taking a survey on magic - just one simple question - and promise to report the results right here next month. If you have a moment, please click here http://www.alxpoll.com/cgi-bin/poll.cgi?user=267380 and register your opinion. Make sure you drop by the Recipes page where you can find a scrumptious recipe for Bananas Foster and an equally delicious one for my favorite Greek Salad. Feel like some more Good Advice? I have that for you too. And while you're at it, please check out my Writers Daily Quote service. (If you scroll down that page, you'll find the URL for the archive with hundreds of great writerly words of wisdom.) As long as you're here, why not send me the name of your favorite movie and take a chance on winning a $50 certificate from Amazon.com. And don't forget if you like free stuff, drop me a note with FREE STUFF in the subject line and your name and snailmail address and I'll ship something fun off to you while supplies last.
