Day One: Monthly Letter

May 1, 2000

I don't know why but I've been thinking a lot about magic lately. No, not the David Copperfield kind of magic you see on television. I'm talking about the real thing, those amazing bits and pieces of wonder that can turn any ordinary day into something -- well, into something magical.

A rainbow when you least expect it. A forgotten ten dollar bill tucked away in the pocket of your jacket. A sunny Saturday when the weather reports had all forecast rain.

Everyday magic. Who doesn't believe in that?

But how about those other kinds of magic? What about ESP and ghosts and near-death experiences? We were watching The Sixth Sense this afternoon. You know the scene when Haley Joel Osment's character tells his mother that the answer is "Everyday," the one where his mother dissolves in tears at the knowledge that her late mother is proud of her? I watched that and a shiver ran up my spine. You know why? Because I believe. I don't know why or how, but I do. I believe anything is possible. I believe I don't know half of what's going on in this world or any other. I believe the soul endures even after the body finally lies down to rest. I believe we know this as children and re-learn it again when we're old.

How about you? I'm taking a survey on magic - just one simple question - and promise to report the results right here next month. If you have a moment, please click here
