Day One: Monthly Letter

Barbara Bretton November 2001

Dear Readers,

So much has happened since I last wrote to you that I don't know where to begin. The world we live in changed forever on September 11, 2001. Like everyone else, I'm finding it difficult to adjust to the "new normal." I can only trust that time will help us all to heal and then to regain some of the peace of mind we lost that terrible morning.

Many of you know that my father was struggling with the end stage of colon cancer, a battle he had fought with bravery and courage for almost six years. I am sorry to say that he died October 12th. His last words were my mother's name. I like to think that her face was the first one he saw when he moved from this world to the next.

Many thanks to all of you who have sent me such kind wishes during this long struggle. They were greatly appreciated.

We've begun the task of dismantling their apartment, sorting through pictures and books, boxing up dishes and glasses, giving away food and clothing to local charities. I seem to be uncovering one secret after another, so many that at times it seems as if I didn't know anything at all about my family background. Right now, however, the toughest thing we're facing is finding a home for my parents' beautiful cat Sammi. She's a ten year old calico with a sweet disposition and the desire to spend 24 hours a day curled up on some lucky human's lap. We've discovered that parrots and cats are not a match made in heaven and it just isn't fair to ask Sammi to live her life in our guestroom when she deserves better. So we're carefully beginning the heartbreaking task of finding the perfect home for her.

Somehow I lost track of the fact that A SOFT PLACE TO FALL hits bookstores this month. In fact, it should be on the shelves right now. You can read an excerpt by clicking here. It's a highly emotional and romantic story that is perfect for one of those rainy autumn afternoons that are made for reading.

And please don't forget to enter my November contest. It's a big one!

This is the month when we set aside a day to think about the blessings we've been given, when we gather around the table with friends and family and offer thanks for another of bounty. Times might be tough right now but we're still here, still strong, still free. I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

With affection,
