  • Write what you know.
  • Never doublespace.
  • Trust your publisher: he'll always do right by you.
  • Write from the heart, not the pocketbook.
  • No, the cat can't have a point of view.

When it comes to writing advice, I think I've heard it all. For me, it all comes down to a few very simple principles I'd like to pass on.

  1. Shut up and write.
  2. Don't quit your day job.

Eloquent? Not by a long shot, but painfully true. Here are more words of writerly wisdom from some friends of mine:

The more you read, the better you'll write.

Write anyway. Never mind all the little things that eat your time; never mind letting everybody and his brother (or lawyer) take precedence over your writing. Write anyway. Even if you just click into your work-in-progress for five minutes a day until you can clear Some real time, keep your head in your book.
