I'm deep in the throes of Deadline Psychosis right now so this will be short. I've been under House Arrest for what seems like forever but there's hope on the horizon if I can just corral Hayley and Finn and talk some sense into them.
That's the thing about imaginary friends. They tend to do what they want to do and not what you think they should do. A nasty little habit that pretty much creates havoc with a writer's carefully constructed plans.
Oh, who am I kidding? I never have any carefully constructed plans for a book. I have a cast of characters, a setting, and a general idea but beyond that it's anybody's guess. Books are like giant jigsaw puzzles. Not one of those pretty little paintings, mind you, where you line up all of your leafy green pieces and your sea blue pieces and the nice straight-edged corner pieces. Books are like those humongous free-form jigsaw puzzles with nothing but hundreds of white pieces in crazy shapes that couldn't possibly fit together.
But they do. Sometimes it takes longer than others but sooner or later the pieces start to fit together and the fun begins.
I'm at the fun part right now. We have a cake decorator, a lawyer, a rock star, a kid genius, an oceanographer, three cats, one dog, and a parrot and they are all about to come together in an oceanfront mansion in East Hampton.
