October 2006
The month is half over and I'm just now getting to the website letter. The knitting blog is definitely
taking over my life!
One of my greatest pleasures is reading great food magazines. Gourmet. Bon Appetit. Cooks Illustrated. The
list goes on and on. There's something about food writing that intrigues and delights me. I can garner as
much enjoyment from diving into a first class cookbook as I can from diving into a first class novel.
Sometimes more. A great food writer paints a story for you. A great food writer brings the process alive
so you can feel the heft of the knife in your hand, the smooth ripeness of the tomato on your cutting
board, the seductive aromas of garlic and wine and herbs.
A great food writer knows that cooking is all about the senses and she weaves a magic spell that makes you
long to run to your kitchen and start chopping and dicing.
My friend Kali Amanda Browne is that kind of food writer. For years I've been enjoying her recipes and her
stories in emails and in her blog and it finally occurred to me that you'd love her too. Okay, maybe it
took a Fed Ex delivery of freshly baked Nigella Lawson brownies to close the deal, but I have persuaded Kali
(daughter of the wonderful baker Marie) to take over the monthly recipe column. Trust me when I say you will
be as happy about this as I am.
I asked Kali to write a few words about herself and she sent me this: "Pagan, geek and all-around funky gal,
I was born in New York of several generations of multicultural mixing, spent my childhood in the tropical
haven of Puerto Rico and came of age in the magical borough of Brooklyn. The Food Goddess has a cast
iron frying pan and is not afraid to use it."
You can read more about Kali in her blog at http://www.kalistempleofdoom.blogspot.com – make sure you check out her recipes.
So what's new this month?
- New contest
- New Food Goddess
- Renewed hope that I'll do better in November
Warmly,
