November 2006
Clearly Kali (aka The Food Goddess) is a good influence on me because I'm actually getting my letter to you
finished on time. This month Kali is talking Soup . . . and eggs. I have a hunch that this is in response
to my tale of Roy's homemade Egg Drop Soup that made both Kali and Marie consider giving up eggs forever.
Whatever the reason, I'm already planning to try all three of this month's recipes and know that you'll be
doing the same as soon as you read them.
October was all about getting ready for winter around here and it culminated with a new roof. They draped
the house in a giant turquoise tarpaulin and when the sun hit the west side of the house it was like living
inside a Picasso. (From his Blue period, of course!) Very odd, very disorienting, but fun in a perverse
sort of way. So we now have a new roof, a clean fireplace, and enough wood to see us through. Come on,
Winter! We're ready.
A few of you have written to me and asked about my blog. Well, I'm blogging daily at
Romancing The Yarn
but yes, my personal blog has
been ignored. Actually Romancing The Yarn is about more than just knitting. We had a parade of "hunks"
in October (you can still see them in the Archive but I recommend you prepare yourself for the one of
Russell Crowe -- yikes!) and will feature special guests in November and December.
I'm hard at work on my next book, getting to know the characters, paying attention to them when they
try to tell me something I need to hear. I know it all sounds kind of crazy but the longer I'm in this
business, the less I truly understand about the creative process. I used to think I could only write if
I began the book in longhand on a yellow legal pad. Then I believed I needed an IBM Selectric typewriter
and a Prestige font. Index cards. Photos pinned to a bulletin board. Folders and binders and secret handshakes.
I've tried them all and what works and what doesn't seems to change with every book and I don't know why.
I guess that's the magic that keeps me coming back for more.
Have a wonderful November, everyone, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Warmly,
